Name: Khaz
Race: Batarian
Class: Engineer
Age: 23 in human years
General Appearance: Khaz is of average height, built more for agility than strength. His ridged brown skin, four dark eyes, and sharp teeth might be considered attractive by batarian standards -- but 90% of the galaxy couldn't care less about batarian "standards", and, as a result, Khaz mostly just comes across as (unintentionally) intimidating.
Personality: Khaz has always been introverted, and he keeps to himself whenever possible. This is especially true when it comes to aliens -- a lifetime of absorbing Hegemony propaganda doesn't exactly lend to the most open-minded outlook. Humans in particular tend to make him nervous. Fortunately for them, Khaz isn't the confrontational type. In social situations he can actually be quite friendly when he wants to be, if a little awkward. In combat he prefers to avoid direct conflict, letting his turrets, drones, and explosive traps handle the fighting for him.
Normally Carries: Omnitool, M-3 Predator Heavy Pistol, various grenades and explosives, repair tools, and plenty of omnigel.
Quirks: Has no real social life to speak of, spends more time than is healthy playing video games on his omni-tool. Though knowledgable in the area of technology, has been influenced by batarian government propaganda and can be rather oblivious at times.
Motivation: Khaz's primary motivation is his desire to earn enough credits to buy a small starship of his own. Additionally, he wants to travel the galaxy and experience the sort of freedom that was denied to him in batarian space.
Personal History: Khaz was raised on a small, backwater colony on the fringe of batarian space. Born an only child, he mostly kept to himself in his youth while his parents, members of the impoverished batarian underclass, made their meager living working long hours in and around the colony's only spaceport. It was at this spaceport where Khaz spent the majority of his childhood, dodging staff and security guards while learning exploring the mysteries of the small port and learning all he could about the inner workings of the few ships that docked there.
From a young age, Khaz displayed a remarkable affinity for tech of all kinds -- even so far as to be called a prodigy. It was unthinkable for a batarian of such a lowly caste to overstep the bounds of his class by applying for a formal education on the homeworld of Khar'shan, however, and Khaz held no illusions that he could ever expect to pursue a successful career of his own choosing. Thus, as soon as he was old enough, he followed in his parents' footsteps and took up an ordinary janitorial job at the spaceport's tiny cafeteria. For the time being, his passion for ships and technology remained nothing more than a hobby.
By this time, however, Khaz had entered the 'rebellious teenager' phase common across all races, and he soon fell in with a group of older boys with grand dreams of traversing the galaxy as pirates and mercenaries, leaving the Hegemony far behind. He couldn't help but be impressed by their bravery -- and more than a little bit intimidated by their brawn. Though he knew the Batarian Hegemony kept tight control over all travel in and out of its airspace, Khaz's natural curiosity of the unknown eventually won out over loyalty, caution, and common sense. Khaz agreed to help his friends stow away on a freighter bound for the Terminus Systems.
The result was a disaster. Though they managed to escape batarian space undetected, it soon became clear that Khaz's 'friends' had never had any interest in him or his skills -- they'd only been using him for his familiarity with the spaceport. As soon as the group landed in Omega they ditched him, leaving Khaz penniless and stranded, far away from home. While they lived out their dreams as Blue Suns mercs, at the time Khaz had neither the combat prowess nor the confidence to be accepted into even the most amateur pirate gang -- probably the reason the others had dumped him in the first place. Though he eventually learned to put his tech skills to use as a freelancer, Khaz felt lost. He had no caste anymore, no parents, and there was no Hegemony out here to keep him from overstepping his bounds. For the first time, all he had to rely on were his own abilities. The feeling was terrifying...
...and liberating.
